Milk River Baths: Negril Attractions & Sightseeing, Jamaica

The spring water is a constant 92° F/32° C and is supposedly the most radioactive in the world. Bathers are limited to three 15 minute treatments per day.

Milk River Bath is another of Jamaica's great spas. The radioactivity of the water is many times greater than many of the world's famous spas.

The Spa is located about ten (10) miles south of May Pen, Clarendon, and is open to the public.

The origins of the bath is very interesting, rooted in Jamaica's slave history. The story begins with a slave owned by a man named Jonathan Ludford. He was beaten by his master and ran away into the forest .The slave came upon the Milk River Bath and washed his wounds. The bath soothed his wounds and they began to heal. Upon returning to the slave village his slave master agreed not punish him if he told him the location of the spring. The area was then fenced off and this slave was given the duty to guard it.

The property that the springs were on, were later willed to the government. They built the first bath on the property in 1794 and opened it to public that year. Currently there are 9 baths and a hotel on the property. Today the Milk River Bath is visited by locals and patrons from all over the world for its renowned healing power.

Located in Clarendon - The baths are open 24 hours a day to hotel guests and 7am to 9pm to the public. There is also a public mineral water swimming pool that is open on weekends.

Milk River-Body

  • Three(3) times as active as Karlsbad, Austria.
  • Nine (9) times as active as Bath, England.
  • Fifty (50) times as active as Vichy, France.
  • Fifty four (54) times as active as Baden Switzerland.

The 6 public baths are located in small private rooms off a seating area. The rooms are smartly tiled. Each can hold several people but the area for changing is really only suitable for one person at a time. The tepid water flows swiftly through the bath.
