Ocho Rios Coral Reef Snorkelling Trip

Ocho Rios is a unique holiday resorts because of the many rivers that flow out into its bays. Know for it's eight rivers, which the town got its name from and the number one tourist attraction (Dunns River Falls) in Jamaica. Ocho Rios is located on the north coast of Jamaica and ideally place between Kingston & Montego Bay. The parish of Saint Ann is know as the Garden parish of Jamaica. So you can understand why Ocho Rios is a popular holiday destination. Because you cannot mention Ocho Rios without Dunns River Falls, Fern Gully and Bob Marley Nine Miles springing to mind.

Dunns River Falls is the top tourist attraction with tourist, cruise ship passengers and local Jamaican's alike. Which get very busy when the cruise ship are in port or on major holidays in Jamaica. The Dunns River flow out into a protect bay, which is sheltered by a coral reef. Snorkelling at this location is very limited, but there are two snorkelling sites to the east and west of this reef.

Ocho Rios Snorkeling Sites

Ocho Rios Bay is a part of the Ocho Rios Marine Park and encompass the Ocho Rios cruise ship port and most of the major hotel resorts. The resorts beaches are protected by the coral reefs which some of them offering very good snorkelling sites. You can choose to snorkel in the sheltered part of the reef or explore one of the many trenches along the coral reef. On calmer days you can venture out to the more open part of the reef for more experience swimmers. These part of the reefs have newer coral growth because they are recovering from hurricane damage and larger fish species.

Some of the best snorkelling sites are located close to the cruise ship port in Ocho Rios. Therefore more ideal for cruise ship passengers, because the total duration of the trip is under two hours. Which will leave you plenty of time to go shopping at one of the duty free shops or explore Dunns River Falls, Dolphin Coves, Fern Gully or the Blue Hole.

Coral Reef Fish Species

At the coral reef, you can swim amongst the bright colorful corals, observe a vast variety of beautiful tropical fish in there natural environment and the vibrant marine life. Some of the most abundant species of tropical fish on the coral reef are angel fish, butterfly fish, cardinals, clown fish, damsels, dart fish, dwarf angels, eels, file fish, goat fish, gobies, groupers, grunts, hawk fish, hogfish, jaw fish, lion fish, puffer fish, rabbit fish, rays, sea horses, snappers, triggerfish and wrasses.

Tropical Coral Reef Species

The most common species of corals are brain coral, bubble coral, carpet anemone, clubbed finger coral, club-tipped anemone, cup coral, elkhorn coral, flowerpot coral, green anemone, lettuce coral, purple base anemone, red cauliflower coral, sea fan, sea mat, sea whip, staghorn coral, star coral, sun coral and torch coral.
