Maroon Village: Montego Bay Attractions, Jamaica

History buffs and outdoor enthusiasts will find excercise and fascination on the Maroon Village tour. Visitors trek to Cockpit Country, the hide–away mountain homesite of the Maroons, runaway slaves who, in 1739, proudly defeated the British to gain their independence and then settled this village. You'll see first–hand how the Maroons lived. Buffet lunch and drinks are served as part of the tour package.

Maroon Village was the settlement of the Maroons, escaped slaves during the Spanish and British colonization. They fled into the mountainous areas as far as possible and settled mostly on the inaccessible, marginal hillside lands; the fertility of the soil in these areas is poor. Some of these villages still exist and can be visited. The miniatures must represent the layout of such a village, including the church, houses, a bar and some farming. The village is built around an access road stretching from the valley up to the mountain.

The Maroon Story

Join us on a journey through time, back to the early seventeenth century when the Spanish; under attack from British Forces, set their slaves free, and fled from the island. The free slaves became the legendary Maroons, and continued to fight the British to maintain that freedom (Peace Treaty was signed in 1739).

Today they live a peaceful and quiet life, high in the mountains, living off the land just as their ancestors did over 300 years ago. They are self–governed and an elected Colonel is the head of state.
