Negril Watershed Environmental Protection Area: Negril Attractions & Sightseeing, Jamaica

Negril Watershed Environmental Protection Area

The Negril Environmental Protected Area is situated at the western end of Jamaica, in the parishes of Westmoreland and Hanover. It consists of the entire Negril watershed - an area of 37,100 ha including unique ecosystems in the Negril Great Morass, the Royal Palm Reserve, and the Fisher River and Negril hills. The Negril Great Morass is Jamaica's second largest fresh water wetland. The Morass is limited by the Fish River Hills to the east, the Negril Hills to the south, a narrow beach strip (Long Bay) and the Caribbean Sea to the west.

Westmoreland is the westernmost parish situated on the south side of the island. It has an area of 807 square kilo metres (311 square miles). There are over 10,000 acres of morass land the largest part of which is called the Great Morass. This contains plant and animal material collected over centuries.

This can be mined as peat, an excellent source of energy. The morass also serves as a natural sanctuary for Jamaican wildlife. The remaining area consists of several hills of moderate elevation and alluvial plains along the coast. This area, which includes the Great Morass, is set aside for the preservation of the island's tropical environment.

NEPT was formed in 1994 by organizations and citizens of the Negril and Green Island watersheds, following a meeting to consider land-based sources of pollution affecting the marine and coastal ecosystems. The organization was mandated to lobby for declaration of a protected area, and to develop a plan for the environmental management of this protected area.

NEPT's mission according to its Strategic Plan 2000 – 2004, is to serve the Negril Environmental Protection Area in order to achieve a better quality of life for present and future generations, by preserving, protecting, conserving and restoring the environment through planning, coordinating and implementing environmental activities that serve as examples for others to follow. NEPT's programmes are based on its six strategic goals: Environmental Education/Communication, Sustainable Community Development, Protected Area Management, Lobbying and Financial Independence/Sustain ability.
