Burchell Memorial Church: Montego Bay Attractions, Jamaica

The Burchell Memorial Church, Montego Bay was established in the year 1824. It is today one of the most popular tourist attraction in the city. This memorial church was built by the Rev. Thomas Burchell. He was a Baptist missionary and an outspoken abolitionist. Most of the early congregations at that time were slaves and Sam Sharpe was a deacon there.

The church was completely burnt down by an angry mob and has been rebuilt again after that. The Jamaican National Heritage Trust founded the Burchell Memorial Church, Montego Bay in 1958 and now looks after the building at number one King Street and the corner of Market Street, Montego Bay, in the district of St. James. It was formerly the Manse of the Burchell Baptist Church.

Baptist missionary. He was primarily best–known as a Baptist Missionary and slavery abolitionist to Jamaica from (1822 to 1846). He was one of a group which included James Phillipo, William Knibb and James Oughton, whom were sent to Jamaica from the Baptist Missionary Society of London to strengthen the abolitionist's cause, responding to requests from revolutionary African Baptists, who had become free from slavery. In 1824, he built the Thomas Burchell Memorial Church in Jamaica, but this was rebuilt in 1834, after planters set fire to it, whilst rioting.
