Peter Tosh Monument: Negril Attractions & Sightseeing, Jamaica

Peter Tosh Monument

Peter Tosh Memorial at Belmont

The Peter Tosh memorial is located in Bluefields, Jamaica, which lies south of Negril on Jamaica's western shore. The tomb of "The Steppin' Razor" is centered within the small mausoleum, recently renewed by much-needed renovations.

A pioneer reggae musician, whose success as part of the 1960s ska band 'The Wailers' saw him shoot to international stardom, Peter Tosh remains one of music's most powerful voices.

Peter Tosh was brutally murdered at his home in Barbican, Kingston by gunmen on September 11, 1987, at the age of 42. Also killed on that fateful night, was Wilton 'Doc' Brown, a herbalist friend of Tosh.

Well known broadcaster, Jeff "Free-I" Dixon (Jasi Rasi Amikabakafari) died a few days later in hospital. Also shot on that night were Tosh's spouse, Marlene Brown; Free-I's wife Joy, drummer Carlton Santa Davis and craft-worker Michael Robinson.

He is perhaps best known for the 'Wailers' hits 'Simmer Down' and 'Get Up, Stand Up' but also enjoyed a moderately successful solo career which saw the title track of his debut album 'Legalise It' become an anthem for marijuana advocates.

In later years he became about as well known for his music as for his increasingly militant views and, during the 1980s, joined former band-mate Bob Marley in becoming something of a trailblazer for the Rastafari movement.

He took the nickname 'Stepping Razor' from a song written by his early mentor Joe Higgs. It was later covered by the 'Wailers'.

Winston Hubert McIntosh was born on 19 October, 1944, in Kingston, Jamaica. A self-confessed trouble-maker, he grew up in the slum of Trenchtown where, inspired by the American stations he could pick up on his radio, he began to sing and learn guitar at an early age.
