Montego Bay Coral Reef Snorkelling

Montego Bay is one of the most popular holiday destination in Jamaica with hotel resorts spreading over a wide area and extending from Rose Hall to Tyrall. Montego Bay is located on the North coast of Jamaica with lot of sheltered bay which are protected by natural coral reefs. Montego Bay marine park is a protected marine environment which promote sustainable fish stock, protection of fish species, protection of the coral reef species and healthy marine ecosystem. Montego Bay Snorkelling Sites

The snorkeling sites are located as close as a few minutes from the beach, but the better sites are located a bit further and require a boat trip to reach them. Some of the most popular snorkelling sites are located close to Doctors Cave Beach, Airport North, Buccaneer Beach, Montego Bay Beach, Unity Hall and Great River Bay.

Doctors Cave Beach is the most famous of all the snorkelling sites because of the history behind the beach. Sir Herbert Barker, a famous British Osteopath visited the beach and later published an article boosting it by declaring that the waters have curative powers and that he was restored to good health after bathing there. He said the waters could cure several ailments. People flocked here from around the world for its supposed curing powers.

At the coral reef, you can swim amongst the bright colorful corals, observe a vast variety of beautiful tropical fish in there natural environment and the vibrant marine life. Some of the most abundant species of tropical fish on the coral reef are angel fish, butterfly fish, cardinals, clown fish, damsels, dart fish, dwarf angels, eels, file fish, goat fish, gobies, groupers, grunts, hawk fish, hogfish, jaw fish, lion fish, puffer fish, rabbit fish, rays, sea horses, snappers, triggerfish and wrasses.

Tropical Coral Reef Species

The most common species of corals are brain coral, bubble coral, carpet anemone, clubbed finger coral, club-tipped anemone, cup coral, elkhorn coral, flowerpot coral, green anemone, lettuce coral, purple base anemone, red cauliflower coral, sea fan, sea mat, sea whip, staghorn coral, star coral, sun coral and torch coral.
